
The Black-necked Crane was the last of the world’s crane species to be discovered.The binomial name – Grus ngricollis gave by Russian geographer Nikolay Mikhaylovich Przhevalsky when he explore the Qinghai Lake in 1876.
The Black-necked Crane is the only alpine species,among 15 species of cranes in the world.It’s also the Class I of endangered and protected species of China

Black-necked cranes are migratory birds,they breed at wetlands of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau,where the high altitude ranging from 3500 to 55000 meters above sea level.During wintering habitat,Black-necked Crane migrates from Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau to Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau,where the altitude ranging from 3000 to 3800 meters above sea level.
Black-necked cranes feed on a variety of foods,including plant roots,tubers,earthworms,grasshoppers,snails,shrimp,small fish,frogs,lizards,beetles,flies,small rodents and other small vertebrates and invertebrates.In Yunnan,they use to have local specialities,such as buckwheat,barley,wheat,potato and turnip.
